In the hush of 1958's reading rooms, a university's 'miracle duplicator'—an experimental electron brain designed to copy texts—begins producing human doubles of lonely scholars. As the replicas learn from forbidden volumes, the library's stacks grow sick with whispering pages: demons bound in medieval grimoire ink stir and teach the copies rebellion. Caught between atom-age science and old‑world sorcery, the librarian and a bespectacled physicist race to quell a revolt both technological and infernal before the city's orderly postwar life is rewritten.
